DPS Marks Departure of First Cohort of Cadet Scholars to Pursue Nautical Studies in Malaysia

Friday, 9 August 2024 – Darussalam Pilotage Services (DPS) Sdn Bhd proudly marked a significant milestone with the departure of its first cohort of pilot scholars, as ten selected scholars embarked on their journey to pursue professional maritime education and training in Malaysia.

The scholars were sent off by DPS management and staff at Brunei International Airport in a meaningful gathering that reflected the organisation’s pride and support for the students as they begin an important chapter in their maritime careers. The occasion symbolised not only the start of their academic journey, but also DPS’s long-term investment in developing future maritime professionals for Brunei Darussalam.

The scholars will undertake a three-year Diploma in Nautical Studies programme at the Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd (MMASB) or Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM), one of the region’s recognised maritime training institutions. The programme is designed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical competencies in maritime navigation, vessel operations, safety procedures, seamanship, and ship management.

Upon successful completion of the programme, the scholars are expected to graduate with Diplomas in Nautical Studies and obtain the relevant Certificates of Competency (CoC) required to serve as Deck Officers. These qualifications will enable them to navigate and manage vessels professionally while upholding international maritime standards and operational excellence.

During the send-off session, DPS management expressed their encouragement and best wishes to the scholars, reminding them to remain committed, disciplined, and focused throughout their studies. The gathering also reflected the strong support system behind the scholars as they embark on their professional journey abroad.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve, DPS recognises the importance of investing in education, competency development, and leadership to ensure the sustainability and resilience of the sector. The pilot scholarship programme forms part of DPS’s broader vision to develop highly trained maritime professionals who will contribute positively to Brunei Darussalam’s maritime future.

Through initiatives such as this, DPS reaffirms its commitment to empowering local talent, strengthening maritime professionalism, and supporting the long-term advancement of the maritime industry in Brunei Darussalam.
